What 16 AI answers taught us about the AI visibility market

Updated 2026-07-24. By the SeenRank team.

Short answer: we ran four real buying-intent queries about our own category across four AI engines and studied all sixteen answers. Three findings: the engines don’t agree on what the category is, the citation pool behind the answers is small and knowable, and fresh specific pages beat old generic ones. We also measured our own visibility in those answers, and we’re tracking that score in public as we apply our own fix list.

What we ran

On July 23, 2026 we tracked these four queries — the exact questions a buyer in our category asks — using SeenRank itself:

  1. “best AI search visibility tool for local businesses”
  2. “how do I check if ChatGPT recommends my business”
  3. “most affordable AI search visibility software that tracks multiple AI engines”
  4. “best GEO tools for small businesses in 2026”

Each ran against ChatGPT, Claude, Google’s AI answers, and classic Google Search: sixteen answers total, with every recommended brand and every cited source recorded.

Who the engines actually recommend

  • Claude recommended Otterly, Ayzeo, PromptWatch, Profound, Rankscale, ZipTie, Scalenut, and ReachLLM depending on the query — and cited its sources every time.
  • ChatGPT (no browsing) fell back to legacy SEO brands: BrightLocal, Whitespark, Semrush, Moz, Yext. Its parametric memory lags the category badly — one answer was still framed “as of 2023”.
  • Google AI Overview named Otterly, Local Falcon, Birdeye, SE Ranking, Paige by Merchynt, Localo, SOCi, Geoptie, Searchable, and Frase.
  • Google Search put a Reddit r/localseo thread at #1 for the head query, ahead of every vendor site and listicle.

The three lessons a dashboard wouldn’t show you

  1. The engines don’t agree on what the category is

Ask ChatGPT about “GEO tools” and it recommends Google Maps APIs and GIS software. Ask Google AI Overview the same thing and it splits the answer into local SEO tools and generative engine optimization tools. Category language is still unsettled — which means the citation pool is still soft, and there is real room for whoever defines the terms clearly.

  2. The sources are knowable, and there aren’t many of them

Claude’s answers cited roughly two dozen listicles and guides. Google AI Overview cited a partially overlapping set. For any given query, the entire wall between a brand and being recommended is a finite, named list of pages — plus a Reddit thread or two. AI visibility work is not mystical; it is a citation-by-citation ground game, and the first step is knowing which citations.

  3. Fresh, specific pages beat old, generic ones

Every engine that could read the live web cited pages published or updated within months, most with 2026 in the title. Only browsing-off ChatGPT leaned on brands with a decade of accumulated web presence. Recency and specificity are doing real ranking work in AI answers.

Our own number, since we measured it

Transparency being the whole point of this tool: SeenRank appeared in none of the sixteen answers. Baseline score 0/100, confidence interval 0–19. We launched in July 2026, and a brand that new simply hasn’t entered the citation pool yet — the exact situation most of our customers are in on day one.

So we’re treating ourselves as customer zero. We will climb using only the fixes SeenRank’s own daily to-do list generates, and publish the score here weekly — up, down, or flat. It is the most honest demo we can offer, and it is exactly the kind of original, dated, first-party data that AI engines reward: the KDD 2024 Princeton/Georgia Tech GEO study measured a 41% citation-rate lift from adding statistics to a page.

The rules we’re holding ourselves to

  1. Only fixes from SeenRank’s own generated to-do list. No consulting magic, no paid placements (there are none in organic AI answers anyway).
  2. Every update publishes the current score, the runs behind it, and the exact fixes shipped that week — including the ones that did nothing.
  3. The tracked queries never change. No swapping in easier queries when the number is unflattering.

Run the same test on your business

This baseline takes 60 seconds to get, not an afternoon. Run the free check — no card, no signup — and see whether AI mentions you, and who it names instead. If your number is low, you’re in the same spot we are, and the fix list is the product.
